Articulation Disorders

Articulation refers to the way that we say sounds.
Therefore, if a person is saying/using a sound inappropriately in speech, they may have an Articulation Disorder.
You may have heard your child's teacher say they are having difficulty understanding your child's speech, and they may have used words such as, "misarticulations" or "unintelligible". Depending on your child's age, some speech errors may be age appropriate.

There are four types of Articulation Errors:
  1. Additions: adding a sound within a word: /ba-lack/ for /black/
  2. Deletions: deleting a sound within a word: /nake/ for /snake/
  3. Substitutions: changing or substituting a sound for another: /tat/ for /cat/
  4. Distortions: when speech sounds sound "off", for example: hyponasal speech (sounds like you have a cold)
